FACE OF BALAKLAVA CUP ANNOUNCED

Sophie Holland-SmithThoroughbred racing is a sport full of traditions and one of the most highly anticipated traditions of country racing is the announcement of the Face of Balaklava Cup.

This year’s ambassadorial duties have been awarded to Sophie Holland-Smith, 18, of Millswood, who will be performing her first official duty on Friday 22 July 2011 at the Balaklava Cup Media Launch luncheon at the Lakes Resort.

Sophie is a fashion enthusiast, deriving her inspiration from the iconic King William Road, Hyde Park where she works part time around her tertiary studies in Physiotherapy.

A regular at the Oakbank Easter Races, Sophie loves the carnival atmosphere of country racing where the laid back style meets city glamour.

“Balaklava Cup is a South Australian icon. It’s definitely an event on the social calendar that has people checking their inboxes for an invite. It’s like a gold ticket to one of the best parties of the year!” said Sophie.

“There’s something for everyone, it’s not just about the horses on the day, but also about fashion and fun on the sidelines.”

Sophie will be busy in the lead up to the Balaklava Cup which for the first time since 2007, falls on the last Wednesday in August rather than the traditional first week of September date.

As the Face of Balaklava Cup, Sophie will be involved in the judging of the King William Road Fashion on the Field event.

“I’m really excited to be judging Fashion on the Field, the prizes from King William Road are amazing and the winner qualifies for the statewide final of Fashion at The Races in Adelaide”, said Sophie.

“Taking out the Fashion on the Field at Balaklava Cup gets you one step closer to winning a Volkswagen Polo at next year’s South Australian Derby Day.”

King William Road Hyde Park is the official fashion partner of this year’s Balaklava Cup, with the boutique precinct providing prizes for three Fashion on the Field categories – Men’s, Women’s and Best Headwear.
